SYNOPSIS of CHAPTERS
Chapter 1:
Paul tells of his escape from near-death in Asia Minor, explaining why he did not visit them as planned: in order to spare them his rebuke.
Chapter 2:
He enjoins them to now lift the excommunication he first required from them, of the member who openly practiced sin while enjoying their toleration.
Chapter 3:
He compares Old Covenant with New: one glorious but past, one more glorious and present; declaring that the blindness of the Jewish remnant will be lifted.
Chapter 4:
He compares the light that Christ sheds in the heart to the Creation in Genesis, and tells the theological reason for the crushing ordeals the apostles underwent.
Chapter 5:
He explains the theological reason for the afflictions of the human body itself: our "groanings", not to be rid of the body, but to be clothed upon with a new one.
Chapter 6:
Paul lists for this church his hardships and ordeals he endured for them, as he tries to protect them from the slanderers and liars poisoning his own reputation.
Chapter 7:
Paul reminds the church why he had to be harsh with them before: it was out of love. He rejoices that they then repented, showing respect for his authority.
Chapter 8: [optional recitation]
Paul stresses the importance of their financial giving.
Chapter 9: [optional recitation]
Paul further stresses the importance of their financial giving.
Chapter 10:
Paul gives examples of what the slanderers at Corinth were saying in their effort to destroy the church by destroying Paul's relationship with the church.
Chapter 11:
He continues his attack on slanderers who boasted their religious credentials at his expense. He laments that now he too must "boast" to keep the church.
Chapter 12:
False prophets were claiming visions and divine guidance as way of refuting Paul. So he reluctantly defends his ministry with a "third heaven" experience he had.
Chapter 13:
He mentions a coming third visit to them, warning that if they continued to entertain slanders and lies he will come with an apostolic rebuke, with signs following.
